Thomas Shepherd Inn guests frequently visit Antietam Civil War battlefield located four miles from Shepherdstown in Sharpsburg, MD. Also popular is historic Harper's Ferry, located only twelve miles from Shepherdstown.
The historic Inn building, built in 1868, was originally a parsonage, then clinics and home for two physicians and their four children. It was remodeled into the B&B in 1984. Current owners purchased the Inn in 2021, immediately closed it for remodeling, and re-opened the Inn in April of 2022. Remodeling included 4 new bathrooms, new roof and gutters, 2 new water heaters, complete new electric service "breaker box", Indow brand acoustic window inserts throughout, new storm doors, plaster and paint throughout, thick granite tops placed on every radiator, upgraded lighting, integrated smoke detectors, emergency lighting and exit signs, coded entries, and multiple other repairs and upgrades. All new kitchen and owner's suite master bath were installed by prior owners in 2020. This Inn is in pristine and beautiful, turn-key condition.

This spacious Inn boasts high ceilings, wide hallways, large windows, beautiful trim and moldings, and gorgeous hardwood floors.
The first floor rear of the building houses the owner's quarters with private entrance. The first floor front of the building houses the spacious entry, the majestic parlor with working gas log fireplace, a relaxing Civil War themed lounge with a lovely fireplace, a guest powder room, and the large and attractively remodeled kitchen.
The second floor houses the six inviting and thoughtfully-furnished guest suites, and the attractive library which is located off the large upstairs back porch. Guests can enter the Inn through either the first floor front door, or the second floor back porch door, with coded entries. There is private off-street parking located at the rear of the Inn's spacious back yard garden which features a new flagstone walkway and new fence. Easy entry to the Inn is provided from the parking lot up the new back staircase and through the upstairs back porch door into the library.

About the Owner's Quarters

The owners quarters has a private entrance off the back yard garden and private parking lot. It is comprised of a very large and lovely bedroom/sitting room with a double-sided brick fireplace between. The sitting room area has a double recliner loveseat, and a tv mounted above the working gas log fireplace. The very large business office area has spacious storage cabinets, two desks, a filing cabinet, other furniture, and a small refrigerator. There is a second large bedroom we currently use as our "walk-in closet". There is another cozy room with an exterior entrance which we use as a second "tv room". The bathroom was remodeled in 2022 and features a glass door walk-in shower.

Business Description:

We are currently operating approximately 8 months in 2025, although we have operated year-round in our previous years of ownership, as have previous owners. Shepherdstown and the surrounding area, Shepherd University, and the Thomas Shepherd Inn attract guests throughout the entire year. We have a full-time housekeeper who would desire to stay with new owners, and would eagerly work as often as requested. Business during July pays for most or all of the major annual expenses at the Inn, when Shepherdstown hosts the month-long CATF Theater Festival which is currently in it's thirty-fifth year here. We have operated as a relaxing get-away for adults, so we have not allowed guests under age 21, nor have we allowed pets. We use the very economical and easily navigated "Think Reservations" reservations system, and "Ring Central" for our business cellphone, which has enabled us to maintain the phone number that the Inn has had for many years. With the ability to operate the phone, email, and reservations system while away from the Inn, we have had freedom to go on long vacations, as well as day trips to enjoy activities in the area while physically being away from the Inn. Our housekeeper frequently greets guests and manages the breakfast buffet, in addition to expertly handling all of the housework. Comments from guests include the words immaculate and meticulous, as well as relaxing and perfect. The beauty of Inn ownership is that your business pays for your home, you do not fight traffic and bad weather getting to work, and you can manage your schedule in any way you choose by blocking off days, weeks, or months to suit your lifestyle. Because Shepherdstown is in such an attractive location close to big cities as well as beautiful mountains and countryside, and is also a wonderful place to live, several former Thomas Shepherd Inn owners still reside in Shepherdstown. We would likely stay here for part of the year ourselves after selling. The business systems we use are easily transferable to new owners and we would be available to ease transition to new owners in every way possible. Thomas Shepherd Inn has been a beloved staple in Shepherdstown for 41 years, and is very highly regarded by Shepherdstown locals and guests alike. We won WV Magazine's Best of West Virginia B&B in 2023!
